A lot of Saturday's action in the European Trophy centered around the goalies. In four of the seven games, a goalie received three stars as best player of the game.
In Sweden, two Swiss clubs and one Swedish club were stopped by superb goaltending. ZSC Lions outshot Frölunda HC 29-24, but Julius Hudacek in Frölunda's net stopped everything and his team held on to a 2-0-win. In Stockholm, HC Fribourg-Gottéron dominated against Djurgårdens IF but Chet Pickard saved all 32 shots thrown at him and made sure Henrik Eriksson's late second period goal was all Djurgården needed to win. Another great goalie hero of the night was Sandro Zurkirchen of EV Zug, he stopped 39 shots in the game against Färjestad BK. Zug was outshot 19-2 in the last period, but one of those two shots was a gamewinning 2-1-goal from Josh Holden and Zurkirchen handled the rest.
The fourth goalie to receive the award was Felix Brückmann of Adler Mannheim. Adler played in a tight game against Jokerit who made their first appearance in the European Trophy of the year. The score was level 1-1 until the penalty shootout, where Brückmann stopped two penalty shots and helped secure two points for Adler. He had a total of 34 saves.
For most of the teams playing games on Saturday, it was their second game in as many days. ERC Ingolstadt however, rested yesterday and perhaps it gave them an extra edge against HIFK in the last 20 minutes of hockey? HIFK was up by a goal until the third period which belonged to the Germans who scored three unanswered goals, two from Alexander Oblinger's stick, and won their first in the European Trophy - final score 5-3.
SC Bern also had a magnificent third period performance. Midway into the third period down 3-0 against Brynäs IF, they launched a big comeback and with just 21 seconds left Ryan Gardner made it 3-3. The same Gardner stepped up in the penalty shootout for the winning goal to secure Bern's first points in the tournament.
Tappara demonstrated fantastic power play skill against Bili Tygri Liberec. In the 7-2 win, Tappara scored five goals on one-man-advantages! Among the goal scorers for the home team was Aleksander Barkov, the 16-year-old talent who scored for the second game in a row while Chris Connolly had a goal and three assists.
